Special Announcement: Mark your calendars! On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Worldview Projectwill partner with the San Diego Diplomacy Council, the SD Public Library, and KPBS on a special streaming event for One Book One San Diego. The book is Being Heumann: an Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist by Judith Heuman. Guest panelists for the discussion are Alex Montoya, a business owner, triple amputee, author, and speaker, and Jessica Rodriguez Montoya, a disability rights lawyer in Mexico.

Events are a wee bit sparse this weekend, but things really pick up next week!
Tonight (Friday) the Beatles vs. Stones battle of the tribute bands returns to the Belly Up in Solana Beach. Having been to one of their shows, I can assure you will have a great time. Unfortunately, the Center for World Music's Maqāmāt: Pathways to Beauty in Arab Music at the Mingei is sold out. There will be 3 other concerts in the coming months, so be sure to check the Center for World Music's event page to snag your tickets before they sell out.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at the Hall of Nations in Balboa Park (International Cottages). the Eredő Hungarian Folk Band will perform Hungarian folk tunes along with some bluegrass numbers. Fans of the late Selena Pérez are sure to enjoy the Siempre Selena (Forever Selena) party at the Rail (San Diego's first gay bar) in Hillcrest. Selena impersonators, a Latin X market, piñatas to whack, and Selena tunes spinning all night!
Tuesday, the San Diego World Affairs Council will present an online streaming panel discussion on the Convention on the UN's Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (which the US has not yet ratified). Guest speakers are Elahe Amani, President of the Woman's Intercultural Network, and Rosemary Straley from the League of Women Voters.
Wednesday, at UCSD's Art Power, the Niger band Les Filles de Illighadad (Daughters of Illighad) will play contemporary renditions of Tuareg folk music.
Next Thursday the 4-day WOW (Without Walls) Festival kicks off at Liberty Station with 24 theater, dance, and music performances from local, national, and international artists. Also next Thursday, the Pacific Arts Movement (Asian Film Festival) will launch its Spring Showcase with film screenings and other events. The showcase will continue until the following Thursday. As always the selection of films looks wonderful. At USD there will be a panel discussion on Black Women's Cultural (In)Visibility. The event will also be live-streamed. Front Arte & Cultura, in conjunction with their Love is an Action exhibit, will screen online Dia De La Mujer In Retrospect. The San Diego Italian Film Festival will present an online screening of the film Molecole (Molecules). They will also have a Follow-up Discussion of the film on Sunday the 24th. Warwick's will host author Vanessa Hua as she discusses and signs her new book, Forbidden City.
Next Friday, in celebration of Arbor Day, there will be a Concert and Dance by the Latin salsa band Rumba Y Soul at Civita Park. Get there early and you can take a Salsa class! The Ukrainian “ethno chaos” band DakhaBrakha will perform at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. Alacranes Musical, a band that specializes in regional Mexican Duranguense music, will perform at the Blue Agave Nightclub.
Next Saturday, the 37th Annual Linda Vista Multicultural Fair and Parade will take place. We've attended several years and had a great deal of fun. The Chinese Historical Society and Museum is hosting an online lecture with Ambassador Elena A. Wachong Ho who will discuss How to Find Your 2,600 Year-Old Chinese Family Roots. The House of Spain at the International Cottages in Balboa Park will hold its annual Cervantes Festival. Hey, save some paella for us! Also Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Taco & Beer Festival will take place downtown, with beer, music and of course, tacos. Ashton Gallery in partnership with the San Diego Visual Arts community to host a charitable Art Show and Opening for their Sunflower Collection exhibition. The event will feature 60 plus large and mid-sized original works of art by local artists, all created in the theme or colors of Ukraine’s national flag, flower, or landmarks. Proceeds will be donated to The Red Cross. At St. James by the Sea, the Scottish group Dunedin Consort will perform Bach cantatas and concertos. Mexican singer/songwriter Pancho Barraza will perform at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre (SDSU).
Next Sunday, the Worldbeat Center will host its 30th Annual Multi-Cultural Earth Day, which will include drum and dance performances a seed exchange, and more. At the Normal Heights Community Dev, Peña Flamenca Carmen Amaya celebrates La Feria de Abril featuring a live Flamenco troupe and a special Flamenco playlist to encourage non-stop dancing. The House of England will hold its annual Lawn Program at the International Cottages with English music, dance, and food. And Moxie Theatre will commence performances of Mother of the Maid, a view of the life of Joan of Arc from the perspective of her mother!
